How to clean your makeup brushes correctly

Make-up brushes are indispensable for a beautiful, well-groomed look — but they also deserve the necessary attention and care. In this blog post, I explain why hygiene is so important, how I work with each client, and how to properly clean and maintain your brushes at home.

Hygiene is my top priority

At Valerie DB Make-up, I use a separate brush set for each client. After each treatment, I thoroughly clean the entire set. This way, I can be sure that no bacteria are transferred from one client to another. I absolutely want to avoid skin problems, irritations, or infections — your safety and comfort are always central.

Clean brushes are not only more hygienic, they also perform better. A brush full of dried make-up gives a less even result and can irritate the skin. Reason enough to clean them regularly!

How do you clean your brushes correctly?

Cleaning brushes is easy, but there are a few important rules to keep them in top condition.

What do you need?

  • Lukewarm water — never hot or boiling
  • Mild shampoo for normal hair — gentle enough for the bristles of your brush

Step by step

  1. Hold the brush with the bristles downwards under lukewarm running water.
  2. Apply a small amount of mild shampoo to the bristles.
  3. Gently massage in circular motions — treat the bristles as if it were your own hair.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water until the water is clear.
  5. Gently pat the brush dry with a towel and reshape the bristles.
  6. Let the brush dry flat or with the bristles downwards — never upright in a glass.

What should you definitely avoid?

No hot or boiling water

This is the most common mistake: washing brushes with hot water. Hot water dissolves the glue that holds the bristles in the handle. The result? The bristles come loose and your brush is ruined. So always use lukewarm water.

No knots in the bristles

Treat the bristles of your brush gently and do not rough them up. Knots damage the bristles and make the brush less soft on the skin. Always massage in the direction of the bristles and reshape them after washing.

How long do brushes last?

With proper care, good make-up brushes will last a very long time. Treat them with love — clean them regularly, let them dry properly, and store them in a dry place — and they will remain soft, supple, and functional for years.

A well-cared-for brush is not only more hygienic but also gives a better make-up result. So it's an investment that pays off!
