Alles over spray-tan! De gouden gloed, zonder de zonnige gevaren!

All about spray tanning! The golden glow, without the sunny dangers!

A tanned skin is often associated with health, energy, and a holiday feeling. But too much time in the sun can be harmful to your skin, leading to premature aging and even skin cancer. Fortunately, there is a safe solution to get that bronzed complexion without the harmful UV rays: spray tan! In this blog post, we'll tell you everything about spray tan, from its benefits and process to tips for maintaining your new glow.

What is Spray Tan?

Spray tan is a self-tanning treatment where a fine mist is applied to the skin to create a natural, brown complexion. The active ingredient in the spray, usually dihydroxyacetone (DHA), reacts with the dead skin cells on the skin's surface, creating the brown color. This process is completely safe and is often performed in a salon or at home using special spray equipment.

The benefits of Spray Tan

1. Without UV rays

One of the biggest benefits of spray tan is that you can enjoy tanned skin without the harmful effects of sunbathing. No more worries about skin damage, sunburn, or the risk of skin cancer.

2. Fast results

Unlike sunbathing, where you have to wait days to get a nice tan, spray tan offers immediate results. Within an hour of the treatment, you'll already see a difference, and the color continues to develop in the hours thereafter.

3. Long-lasting glow

Spray tan usually lasts 5 to 7 days, depending on your skin type and how well you maintain it. It fades gradually without streaks, making it a convenient option for special occasions or holidays.

4. Hides imperfections

The brown color provided by spray tan can help to camouflage imperfections such as cellulite, scars, or skin blemishes, making your skin look even and radiant.

How does a treatment work?

Before tanning

  • Loose clothing: After the treatment, wear dark, loose-fitting clothing or underwear. Or possibly a dark bikini. After washing, the clothing will be clean again. For a streak-free result, however, it is advisable to only wear underwear and/or a bra.
  • Wash before treatment: It is highly recommended to wash with a pH-neutral shower gel. No oil. If you are going to shave your legs (razor), do so at least one day before the treatment.
  • Exfoliate: Exfoliate (with a product WITHOUT oil) your skin before the session, preferably the day before. Shaving and waxing can be done up to 8 hours before the session (otherwise your skin will be too sensitive).
  • Make-up/Perfume: Remove all skin make-up before the Spray Tan is applied to the skin. Eye make-up may remain.
  • Cream or lotion: The use of body lotion, (night) cream, and perfume is absolutely not recommended on the day of the session.

During tanning

  • Jewelry: All jewelry must be removed, unless it is a ring/piercing that cannot be removed or small jewelry such as stud earrings. Bracelets, necklaces, and anklets must always be removed.
  • Hair: Bring something to tie up your hair.

After tanning

  • Showering and/or bathing: You can shower again at least 6–8 hours after the treatment. This allows the tanning lotion to be properly absorbed into the skin. If the water becomes discolored during showering or bathing, this is merely excess lotion — this will not affect your tan. Clean your body with a flat hand while washing. The use of a washcloth, (foam) sponge, or similar is highly discouraged, as this has an exfoliating effect.
  • After showering: Pat your body dry and DO NOT rub. As long as the tan looks good, this is highly recommended.
  • Perspiration: Postpone intense exercise for a while after the session. Excessive sweating immediately after the spray session is not recommended.
  • Jewelry: All (precious) metal items must remain off until the liquid has been fully absorbed, otherwise streaks may appear on the skin.
  • Bad weather: In bad weather, bring an umbrella to avoid streaks.
  • Cream: To maintain the tan for longer, it is good to apply a special moisturizing cream to the tanned skin daily.

What should I pay attention to?

  • Skin diseases: Do you often suffer from psoriasis, eczema, or allergic reactions? Unfortunately, we cannot help you with psoriasis and eczema, as this is not safe — unless it concerns small localized spots (e.g., elbows) that we can avoid. For allergic reactions, we first do a test on a small patch of skin.
  • Pregnant women: Can be treated. No adverse effects are known.
  • Antibiotics and medications: Following a course of antibiotics, certain heavy contraception, or hormonal medication can change the color of the tan and/or affect its absorption into the upper skin layer. With antibiotics, it is best to postpone the tan. In other cases, for a special occasion, it is best to schedule a trial tan first.

Tips for maintaining your Spray Tan

1. Hydrate your skin

Well-hydrated skin retains color longer and ensures an even tanning process. Use an alcohol-free moisturizing cream daily.

2. Avoid hot water

Prolonged exposure to hot water, such as in a sauna or a hot bath, can make the color fade faster. Choose lukewarm water to avoid over-drying your skin.

3. Avoid abrasive products

Do not use rough scrubs or exfoliating products, as these can remove the color by sloughing off dead skin cells.

4. Ensure gentle cleansing

Wash your skin with a mild, moisturizing shower gel to preserve the spray tan for as long as possible.

Additional information

  • The tan will last approximately 5 to 7 days if you take good care of it — use a moisturizing cream and mild soap when showering.
  • In the first few hours after the treatment, the bronzer in the product will make you browner. However, you are not protected against the harmful effects of the sun — so always use a protective factor.
  • For brides: schedule your appointment three days before the wedding. Your complexion will be at its best, and you won't risk stains on your dress. Any stains can often be removed by dry cleaning.
  • Regular treatments help to deepen your color and extend the duration of the tan.
  • Swimming and going to the sauna after the treatment can have a detrimental effect — the tan may fade faster. It is also better to postpone exercising for a day due to perspiration.

What makes me so tan and what is the difference with bottled self-tanner?

  • Self-tanner only colors the dead skin cells in the epidermis.
  • The airbrush lotion contains DHA (dihydroxyacetone), a substance that stimulates pigment and penetrates deeper into the skin, making your tan last longer.
  • We distribute the tanning on the body through a mist.
  • The tanning colors beautifully naturally brown according to your own pigment.

Conclusion

Spray tan is a safe, fast, and effective way to get a sun-kissed complexion without exposing your skin to harmful UV rays. With proper preparation and aftercare, you can enjoy a beautiful, long-lasting glow. So, what are you waiting for? Time for a touch of sunny radiance, all year round!
